Science Fiction/Fantasy

Some of my favorite authors and the books and series worth checking out:

Ray Bradbury

Okay, so I know it's a classic. But this book is one of my favorite sci-fi stories of all time. If you haven't read it - read it immediately. This is one book that should be on every shelf. Fahrenheit 451

Marion Zimmer Bradley

I have read many Arthurian legends and novels, but none have given me so much to think about. The stories are told with the point-of-view of the women, but guys, don't dismiss this as a chick book. There is great insight and fabulous intensity. It's hard to get your hands on a copy in bookstores, so amazon.com is a great way to get this classic! The Mists of Avalon

Orson Scott Card

There are two series by Card that I believe are MUST-READs. First is the Andrew Wiggin Saga. These books do what very few do, they take you through the very extraordinary life of one man, from childhood to death. Written over a decade, all of these books will keep you reading non-stop.  The last ones investigate other characters from Ender's early life.

Orson Scott Card - Children of the Mind, Ender series

The other series is The Tales of Alvin Maker. I had never read very much alternate history before this - it's fantasy set in an America that could have been. Again, a trip through the birth, childhood, life... (the story is still continuing) of a very special type of person - a maker.

Orson Scott Card - Heartfire, Alvin Maker series

Terry Goodkind

The Sword of Truth Series - These are very entertaining. I am reading the first one out loud to Todd, and it's one of the first books out of the many we've read aloud to each other that Todd will say "Read on to the next chapter, please!"

Robin Hobb

The Farseer is a very enjoyable series by a talented writer. It seems as if I have read so many books about a boy who seems normal, but is destined to be something great. This series takes your expectations and twists them. This is not all happy endings and fairy tales. A fantasy series with a brain and a heart.

Robert Jordan

The Wheel of Time Series - I wait breathlessly for each one of these to arrive. I have read each one at least three times each. The stories are wonderful, exciting, sometimes humorous, sometimes dark, always captivating. Multiple readings enhance my enjoyment - I discover new prophecies, hints and details every time.  Although later books are slower than the earlier ones, I will read until the series is finished. (The author consistently says he thinks he has three left to write after each book is published!)

Path of Daggers cover

Stephen King

Okay, most people don't think of King as a Fantasy/Science Fiction writer. I hate horror books and movies, and so when my husband encouraged me to pick this series up, I was very skeptical. I had tried a few of his other books, and while they were exciting and scary, there was something missing for me. I read so quickly through these books that I almost beat my Robert Jordan record of 700 pages in 24 hours. In a few words, The Dark Tower series is amazing, indescribable, surreal. Roland, the main character, lives in a world that touches ours, but is a twisting and montage of everything Earth has been, wants to be, fears to be and will be. You will be entranced.

Melanie Rawn

This is an author who writes with an incredible amount of passion. The characters get right down into your system and stay with you. The first two series are complete, and related to each other. You'll want to have all three of each on hand, so that you can plow right on to the next book! The last series, Exiles, is in progress, and is very entertaining so far. Dragon Prince Trilogy:
Dragon Star Trilogy Exiles

Wilbur Smith

I am going to go outside the traditional realm of science fiction/fantasy and recommend some books that I read during my years in Egypt. One is a historical fantasy about an unknown queen and her slave. The other is set in the present and focuses on two people's quest to find the hidden tomb of the pharaoh in the first book. They are VERY well written, and I think any science fiction/fantasy reader would like them. You definitely will if you are interested in or curious about Egyptian antiquities.

River God

The Seventh Scroll

Neal Stephenson

Looking for a twist? Just try and fit your mind around the eerie yet hopeful cityscapes of Stephenson's futures. Mind-expanding, to say the least, thrilling and gripping, for sure. Or try out glimpses of the present's link to past in Cryptonomicon.

Neal Stephenson - The Diamond Age

Tad Williams

Many people are familiar with Williams' Memory, Sorrow and Thorn series, which is true fantasy. In the Otherland series, Williams goes to science fiction, but with a very fantastic twist. This is a vision of what the Internet may someday become, and the people who get sucked into the plans of a very powerful group of leaders.

Janny Wurts

This series details the lives and conflict of two brothers, one gifted with the power of Light, and the other with the power of Shadow. If it seems like a basic battle of Good vs. Evil, think again. The brothers are cursed into combat, and the one whom most people think is the evil one, is really the hero, and vice versa. Wurts does the artwork for all her books, some of the best, in my opinion. A great read. Also, if you have read Raymond Feist's Riftwar series, don't miss his partnership with Wurts in The Daughter of the Empire, showing life on the other side of the Rift. A better story in many ways. Use the search box below to find it.

The Wars of Light and Shadow:

Timothy Zahn

I am a huge Star Wars nut. If you have avoided reading the book series you've seen just because NOTHING could be as good as the original movies, well, get over yourself. Zahn wrote the first of the books continuing the saga, and his are some of the best. The first set of three are 5 years after Return of the Jedi, the next two are 15 years after. For more on the Star Wars continuation books, go to the Del Rey site.

Animation

This is a book that I think no Warner Bros. Animation Fan should be without.

Jerry Beck and Will Friedwald's: Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies: A Complete Illustrated Guide to the Warner Bros. Cartoons. This is a MUST HAVE. Cartoon summaries, filmographies by title, character, etc.
