Thomas Booklist’s Guide

to Excellent Novels for Young People

Last updated: January 31, 2004

List compiled and updated by H. Todd Thomas

Do you like curling up with a good novel? I do. And if you're the kind of reader who likes adventure and excitement, along with some good laughs, then these books are bound to please. To help you make appropriate choices, I have included these labels to guide you:

TSC: Thomas’ Student Choice

Each year, my students pick their favorite read-aloud stories. The top stories chosen by my 3rd and 4th grade students (1996-2002) have this label. Books with an asterisk (*) are ones that have been read aloud to date. These books tend to be sure and safe bets for any age.

PG-TSC:

Thomas Student Choice Awards, which may warrant Parental Guidance. If you are younger than 15, get your parents' permission to read this one by yourself.

MRO: Mature Readers Only (High School to Adult).

These books, while recommended,  contain subject matter, language, situations and/or a writing style that may not be suitable or appropriate for young independent readers.  I strongly suggest previewing these books to determine their appropriateness for your children or the classroom.

Please Note: Books without a label above are generally recommended for all ages -- young and old alike.

NOTE: Clicking on the titles will take you to Amazon.com's description of the book, reviews and a larger cover picture.  Purchasing the book can be as easy as 1-click!

Clarification of Criteria:

All novels listed above have been read and/or taught by Mr. Thomas, and are books he considers among the best literary offerings for young people because they are engrossing, humorous, insightful, and fun to read.

These novels are generally recommended for intermediate elementary to young adult reading audiences (ages 9-18). Despite the unfortunate "Children's Literature" tags, many adult readers will enjoy these tales.

Mr. Thomas updates this list each summer  -- in time for summer reading.
